with a master in business and administration and have grown up in a
family of beekeepers in Normandy.
I worked in a bee research
laboratory in France collaborating with Rothamsted Research, which is a
big research institute based in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. From this
collaboration came the idea of using honeybees as sniffer bees and we
set up the company, Inscentinel Ltd., which is based in Rothamsted
institute. ”
Brief extracts from the Inscentinel websiteInscentinel is based at the
internationally renowned Rothamsted Research institute, where it
benefits from over a century of insect olfaction research.
Inscentinel Ltd. was formed in
2002 in order to exploit the highly sensitive olfactory ability of
honey bees. Over the last five years Inscentinel has been working with
large organisations, government departments, customs and the military
to test and develop its unique technology for a range of real world
applications.
Bees are able to memorise smells,
so if the trained bee comes across the scent again the reflex action is
to stick out its tongue-like proboscis.
