Beekeeping Association's Introductory Courses in Beekeeping
for Beginners
Both
the 3 Day Course and the Evening Course below are technical courses for
those seriously interested in taking up beekeeping as a hobby. They are
not suitable for those with a more casual interest. Places are strictly
limited. The
lecturers are
all experienced beekeepers. Details of introductory courses for this
year have been left on the site as a guide to probable courses next
year.

The
ABKA course below aims to provide the beginner with the information
required to start keeping honey bees. Students who attend will then be
ready to start on the practical side of the craft of
beekeeping
with an understanding the work needed over the year.

2012 “Introduction to Beekeeping”

This
course is for those who are seriously interested in taking up
beekeeping. It aims to provide sufficient information about bees and
beekeeping for the beginner in readiness to work with bees. The course
addresses how best to care for the bees, the equipment needed, the
year's tasks in the apiary, extracting and preparation of honey
products and responsibility to the public. There will be no live bees
on the course.
Later in the year participants will have the opportunity to visit an
apiary to look into hives with an experienced beekeeper and gain some
hands-on experience with bees.
Cost of course includes a buffet lunch, tea and biscuits.

Introduction to Beekeeping
The Course: 10 Monday evenings
The Dates: Spring Term
16 January – 19 March 2012
The Times: 19.30 – 21.30 hrs
The Venue: Churchill Memorial Hall,

The course will be held on consecutive Mondays.
This is a technical course aimed at those who are interested in
learning about beekeeping with a view to taking it up as a serious
hobby. It is not intended for those with a more casual interest.
The course will teach the basic concepts of beekeeping to those wishing
to start on this important and fascinating craft. As such it will
follow the Introduction to Beekeeping syllabus set by the British
Beekeeping Association (BBKA).
At the end of this theoretical course there will be an opportunity to
visit an apiary for some ‘hands-on’ experience and to meet with
experienced beekeepers. You will be encouraged to join a branch
local to you so that help is at hand when you begin to set up your own
colony of honey bees.

Stephen Brain's Taster
Session
The purpose of the Taster Session is to give an overview of the
essentials of beekeeping and how you get started and trained. The
afternoon will cover a variety of topics so you can see what is
involved in beekeeping. It is also an effective precursor to a full
introduction to beekeeping course:
- nature and structure of the colony
- equipment, hives, including Beehaus
- management throughout the year, including swarm
control
- harvesting
- pests and diseases
- training, help and local organisations
- where to go from here

Introduction to Beekeeping – 3 Day Course

Our 'Introduction to
Beekeeping' course will follow the syllabus developed by BBKA, the
British Beekeeping Association, to provide newly interested ones with a
basic knowledge of the skills and husbandry involved in
beekeeping. It will be delivered by qualified and experienced
BBKA members in our new Teaching Apiary classroom on the campus of Bath
Spa University at Newton Park. Drinks and snacks are provided,
please bring a packed lunch. As a follow up to the course, all
attendees are invited to experience hands-on beekeeping and meet
informally with local beekeepers as the season begins at our Apiary on
site.
