Avon Beekeeping Association's Introductory Courses in Beekeeping for Beginners 

Both the 3 Day Course and the Evening Course below are technical courses for those seriously interested in taking up beekeeping as a hobby. They are not suitable for those with a more casual interest. Places are strictly limited.
The lecturers are all experienced beekeepers.

The ABKA course below aims to provide the beginner with the information required to start keeping honey bees. Students who attend will then be ready to start  on the practical side of the craft of beekeeping with an understanding the work needed over the year.

2011 “Introduction to Beekeeping”

The course aims to provide sufficient information about bees and beekeeping to beginners so that when they start keeping their own bees they will have a good idea of what is going on in the hive, what to do next and their responsibility to the public. The course addresses how best to care for the bees, the equipment needed, the year's tasks in the apiary, extracting and preparation of honey products. There will be no live bees on the course.

Later in the year participants will have the opportunity to visit an apiary to look in a hive with an experienced beekeeper and gain some hands-on experience with bees.

Introduction to Bee Keeping

Evening Course

The Course:         10 Monday evenings

The Dates:             Spring Term

                                    17 January – 21 March 2011 

The Times:                     19.30 – 21.30 hrs

The Venue:            Churchill  Memorial  Hall,

                                      Ladymead Lane, Churchill, BS25 5NH

Course Fee:           £60

The course will be held on consecutive Mondays. 


The course will teach the basic concepts of beekeeping to those wishing to start on this important and fascinating craft.  As such it will follow the Introduction to Beekeeping syllabus set by the British Beekeeping Association (BBKA). 
 
At the end of this theoretical course there will be an opportunity to visit an apiary for some ‘hands-on’ experience and to meet with experienced beekeepers.  You will be encouraged to join a branch local to you so that help is at hand when you begin to set up your own colony of honey bees.
